Highlights

The Christmas carol “Silent Night! Holy Night!” was heard for the first time on Christmas Eve in 1818 in the St. Nikolaus parish church. Following the damaging floods of the 1890’s, St. Nikolaus’ church was demolished and the Silent Night Memorial Chapel was built on the site and consecrated on August 15, 1937.

Every year on December 24th at 5 p.m., a memorial service in honour of the creators of the Silent Night carol takes place in front of the Silent Night Memorial Chapel.

Thousands of people from around the world attend the ceremony and finish by singing “Silent Night” in their many languages.
